Fire Prevention Week Open House

Saturday, October 7, 2017

Come join us as we celebrate Fire Prevention Week 2017
 at the Fire Station!

11am - 3pm on Saturday, October 7, 2017

  • At 11:30am, come watch as we use the “Jaws of Life” to cut apart a car, demonstrating how we rescue victims of a crash.
  • See the live fire demonstration at 12:30pm as we set fire to two, home-like rooms to show how fast a fire can spread.
  • Come see the inside of a helicopter ambulance and watch as they land and take off.
  • See our new fire clown and puppet show.
  • Look at hundreds of fire prevention posters submitted by children from Roanoke and Wayne Cox Elementary schools.
  • Free hamburgers, hot dogs and ice cream!

Join us before the Open House for a Push-in Ceremony for our new fire engine!
The community is invited to join us in this traditional ceremony and to help push the new 2017 fire engine into its new home. The ceremony will start at 10am at the Roanoke Fire Department. Commemorative towels and coffee cups will be presented to those who participate.

The fire truck Push-In ceremony is a tradition that dates back to the 1800’s when fire apparatus were pulled by teams of horses.  When the firefighters would return to their station after a fire, they first would always wash the pumper so as to remove any horse waste that may have stuck to the wheels or body.  Since the horses could not back up, the firefighters would unhitch the team and then push the pumper into the station by hand.  The fact the pumper weighed about 3,000 pounds made it necessary for everyone there to assist.

This tradition has evolved where now the pumper being replaced is used to wet down the new pumper thus symbolizing its first bath and welcoming it to the station.  Everyone then dries off the new truck to prepare it to be moved into its stall.  Like years before, everyone available pushes the new pumper into its new home.

Since our new pumper weighs a lot more than 3,000 pounds, we invite the community to come help us welcome it to our firefighting fleet and push it in to its new Roanoke Fire Station home.
