Building Inspection - Code Enforcement


The mission of the Building Inspection - Code Enforcement Department is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public by enforcing the city's Code of Ordinances and code regulations for:

  • Building
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical code
  • Plumbing


Throughout the construction process, Building Inspection - Code Enforcement is responsible for

  • Code compliance verification
  • Code enforcement
  • Permit issuance
  • Plan review

Permits are required before performing:

  • Alteration
  • Any addition
  • Any new construction
  • Repair of existing:
    • Buildings
    • Electrical
    • Mechanical work
    • Plumbing
    • Structures

Adopted Code

The City of Roanoke has adopted the 2021 International Codes and the 2023 National Electrical Code. Please contact the Building Inspection Department for more information on specific requirements.
