Roanoke Citizen's Academy

What is a Citizen’s Academy?

The Roanoke Citizen’s Academy is a program that offers residents an operational, behind the scenes, look at their local government. This program will consist of presentations and excursions in the areas of Public Safety, Public Utilities, Parks & Recreation, Library, and City Administration.  Classes are held weekly at different facilities around the City.

Who can participate?

Participation in the Roanoke Citizen’s Academy is open to those who live or work in the community, who are age 21 or over, and are registered to vote. The selection process is necessary to ensure potential class members have a high level of interest in how their City operates on a day-to-day basis. Since class sizes are limited to 16 participants, the criteria listed below will be taken into consideration when making the selection, and any applicants who are not selected at this time are encouraged to apply for a future class.

  • People who live within Roanoke city limits.
  • People who own a business within Roanoke city limits.
  • People who work within Roanoke city limits.
  • Graduates of the citizen academies associated with the City’s public safety departments.

The application period is currently closed. Please check back for future academy dates in 2023.
